## Thyroid — "The Body's Engine"
The thyroid controls metabolism, body temperature, blood pressure and growth. Hypothyroidism = gland not producing enough thyroxine.
## Symptoms
Chronic fatigue and weight gain without dietary change. Always feeling cold. Constipation. Dry hair and hair loss. Brittle nails. Depression and mental fatigue.
## Free Testing
TSH blood test: free in health basket for women over 40 / anyone with symptoms.
## Treatment — Simple
Levothyroxine (synthroid): one tablet daily. Cheap, effective, improves symptoms within 4-8 weeks. Take in the morning, 30 minutes before eating. Coffee and calcium supplements affect absorption.
