Menopause

## Menopause — Transition, Not Disease

Menopause begins on average at age 51. The body reduces oestrogen production, causing symptoms.

## Common Symptoms

Hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes (anxiety, irritability, depression), vaginal dryness, concentration difficulties ("brain fog"), increased osteoporosis risk.

## Treatment Options

HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy): most effective for hot flushes and dryness — discuss risks with doctor. Without hormones: exercise, vitamin D + calcium, phytoestrogens (soy, flaxseed), fezolinetant (new hormone-free medication).

## In the Ethiopian-Israeli Community

Language barriers make it difficult to discuss private symptoms with a doctor. Stigma: menopause is rarely discussed. Under-diagnosis: symptoms often attributed only to "stress."
