Asthma

## Asthma in the Ethiopian-Israeli Community

Israeli research found higher asthma rates in children from immigrant families raised in dense urban environments, compared to children raised in Ethiopian villages. Factors: exposure to urban allergens, air pollution, cigarette smoke.

## Symptoms

Wheezing (especially at night), shortness of breath on exertion, chronic morning cough, tight chest.

## Diagnosis

Paediatrician or pulmonologist will perform spirometry. Important to mention the child's childhood environment to the doctor.

## Treatment

Inhalers (bronchodilators, for use as needed). Inhaled corticosteroids (daily preventive). Avoid triggers: pollen, dust mites, smoke, cold air.

## Red Flags — ER Now

Breathing difficulty not responding to inhaler. Blue lips (cyanosis). Neck muscles visibly straining.
