## Sleep Disorders in the Community

ENP research (2023): **62%** of community adults report sleep difficulties. Poor sleep affects concentration, mood, immune system, blood pressure, weight.

## Sleep Hygiene

Fixed bedtime every night. Complete darkness. Temperature 18-20°C. No screens 1 hour before sleep. No caffeine after 14:00.

## Medications

Melatonin: 0.5-3 mg 1 hour before sleep — safe, helps with rhythm. Sleeping pills: prescription only — most cause dependency.

## Sleep Apnoea — Dangerous

Signs: loud snoring, startled awakenings, morning fatigue, high blood pressure. Sleep study (polysomnography) — refer via GP.
