Ethiopian Traditional Medicine: Budeye, Medicinal Herbs and What Research Says
What is Budeye?
Budeye is a Beta Israel traditional healer — a figure with knowledge of herbal medicine, spiritual healing and purification rituals. In traditional society, the Budeye was the first port of call for any illness.
Research Findings
Positive: Several plants used by Budeye practitioners have documented pharmacological properties: Gesho (antimicrobial), Tenadam/Ruta (anti-inflammatory, menstruation-inducing — dangerous in pregnancy!), Kosso (intestinal parasites — with controlled use).
Negative: Cases of poisoning have been documented in Israeli hospitals — mainly from overuse of Kosso.
How to Combine Safely
Tell your doctor about all herbal remedies (drug interactions). Never use Tenadam or Kosso during pregnancy. Consult before giving to children.
