Memorial Day for Ethiopian Jews — 28 Iyar: What We Commemorate and How
What Do We Commemorate?
28 Iyar is the official Memorial Day for Ethiopian Jews who perished on the way to Israel — thousands died from disease, starvation and violence on the journey through Sudan.
Official Recognition
The Knesset legislated the memorial day in 1993. Schools teach it; official state ceremonies take place.
What Happens?
Memorial ceremonies at schools, synagogues and community organisations across Israel. Candle lighting, survivor testimonies, Ge'ez prayer by Kes, special exhibitions at the Ethiopian Jewish Heritage Center.
The Numbers
Estimates: 4,000-8,000 people perished en route between 1977-1991 — mainly children, elderly and the sick.
