Sigd 2026 — the complete guide: date, locations and meaning

What is Sigd

Sigd (Ge'ez: "to prostrate") is the Beta Israel holiday celebrated exactly 50 days after Yom Kippur. In 2026 this falls on 29 Cheshvan — Monday, 9 November 2026. The holiday marks a renewal of the covenant with God and the longing for Jerusalem. It has been a national Israeli holiday since 2008 (Sigd Day Law).

Events by city

Jerusalem (Armon Hanatziv promenade): 08:30 reception; 09:00 fast and prayers led by Kessim; 14:00 fast-break communal meal; 16:00 speeches and music. Buses from 16 absorption cities — reservations close 3 November.

Netanya (Kiryat Nordau — Gan Sigd, 15 Nitzana St): 09:00–13:00 prayers, 18:00 evening concert.

Beersheba (Gan Herzl): 09:30 prayers, 17:30 evening celebration.

Kiryat Malachi (central square): 10:00–15:00, organized by Fidel Association.

Kiryat Gat (city park): 10:00–14:00 with evening at 19:00.

The Kes role and fasting

The Kes (Beta Israel priest) leads the Orit (Torah in Ge'ez) reading, guides the fast, and delivers the debrash (sermon). The fast runs from sunrise to early afternoon. Traditional white dress (netela for women, khamis for men) is customary. All are welcome regardless of background — visitors should not eat before 14:00 and should allow the ceremony to proceed quietly.
