What is it?

"Hesegim" / "ISEF" / "ISEF Foundation" are programs offering several funding options for outstanding Ethiopian-Israeli students.

Main programs

Hesegim (government)

  • Funded by the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration
  • ~600 students/year
  • 75% tuition coverage + 2,500 ILS monthly stipend
  • Requirements: 80+ average in HS/academia

ISEF

  • Private philanthropic foundation, U.S.-headquartered
  • ~400 students/year
  • Full tuition coverage + 3,000-3,500 ILS stipend
  • Requirements: 85+ average + leadership potential
  • Tracks: B.A., M.A., Ph.D.

Typical requirements

  • Israeli citizenship + Ethiopian origin (one parent born in Ethiopia)
  • Psychometric exam 580-650+ (depending on program)
  • Military or national service
  • Personal interview (for ISEF)

Community relevance

  • Critical for closing the academic gap
  • "Default" for Ethiopian-Israeli students — if not Hesegim, then ISEF, otherwise private companies
