Gondar
A city in northern Ethiopia and a historic center of Ethiopian-Jewish life; served as a gathering point of those awaiting aliyah to Israel.
What is Gondar?
Gondar (ጎንደር) is a historic city in northern Ethiopia, near Lake Tana. For many generations, members of Beta Israel lived in and around Gondar and the villages of the region — it is one of the most important centers of Jewish community life in Ethiopia.

Gondar and the aliyah operations
During Operation Moses and Operation Solomon, many community members — including Falash Mura — gathered in Gondar and Addis Ababa awaiting aliyah.

For many families, Gondar is the city of roots — the place from which the journey to Israel began. The name carries deep emotional meaning of home, heritage and longing.
