Stigma in job interviews — how to handle it
The context — worth knowing in advance
A Ministry of Economy employer survey found that only 5.6% of employers expressed willingness to employ Ethiopian-Israelis — the lowest of the groups surveyed. That is not said to discourage but to focus: the barrier is concentrated at the screening stage, which is why an approach through a person — a mentor, an alum, a referrer — works better than a blind application.
If you suspect discrimination
- Document: keep the application, the message, the CV you sent
- Ask for a detailed reason for rejection (legal right)
- If the reason is unconvincing or appears discriminatory — contact Tebeka for free legal counsel
- In severe cases — file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission
