Context and interpretation

Snapshot

Political representation of Ethiopian-Israelis in the Knesset (3 MKs, 2.5%) is actually close to their share of the Jewish population (~2.2%) — but this is the exception. The picture in public-sector employment is far more complex: overall representation in government companies and public corporations (2.44% in 2023) exceeds the administrative target, but it is nearly all concentrated in junior ranks — only one senior Ethiopian-origin employee across all 32 government companies examined. In local authorities and the civil service itself, the picture is even more troubling: only 0.2% in senior local-authority ranks, and 88% of Ethiopian-origin civil servants in the most junior rank (2019).

Law enforcement — an important framing note

Ethiopian-Israelis are over-represented in arrest data (8.2%-9.4% of arrests, versus 2.2% of the population) — but this is enforcement-representation data, not a crime rate. The source (Knesset Research and Information Center) explicitly notes it is hard to know how much this reflects actual offense rates versus complaint rates or "over-policing" — a caveat that should be preserved wherever this data is presented.

What we don't have data on — deliberately

Israel does not tag voter rolls by ethnicity, so there is not, and structurally cannot be, an official figure for voter turnout among Ethiopian-Israelis — neither at the individual nor the locality level. This is an interesting fact in itself about Israel's electoral system, not an omission. Separately, a figure that surfaced in several searches ("3.9% civil-service representation, December 2024, 0.3% senior") could not be traced to an identifiable primary source and is not shown on this page.

Figures are updated yearly from official publications. If you spot an inaccuracy or want to suggest a source — get in touch.
