Learning Amharic — Guide for the Second Generation: Courses, Apps and Resources

Why Learn Amharic?

Connect with parents and grandparents directly; access culture (songs, literature, art, ceremonies); strengthen identity; job market (translation, social work, medicine — demand for Amharic speakers is high).

Starting Point

Amharic is written in Fidel script — 26 letters × 7 forms = 182 characters. It sounds daunting, but the basics can be learned in 2-3 weeks.

Recommended Apps

Duolingo Amharic (free, beginners) | Amharic Alphabet (free, Fidel script) | Pimsleur Amharic ($15/month, listening/speaking)

Formal Courses in Israel

Tel Aviv University: Amharic course — African languages department. University of Haifa: Ethiopian studies.

Tips from Speakers

Start with Fidel (before grammar). Listen to Amharic for 10 min daily. Talk to community elders — they love to help. Don't be embarrassed by broken Amharic — it's better than silence.
